What does it look like?
Not worthy of its whimsical sponsors, Neuschwanstein Castle, "the new Swan Rock," is majestic and magical. Standing on a promontory made of rocks, it follows the building codes of the Roman style of the late 13th century. A mixture of neo-Gothic architecture and medieval Thuringian styles. Ludwig II of Bavaria wanted a splendid building and entrusted the conception to the designer Christian Janke and the construction to the architect Eduard Riedel. Construction of Neuschwanstein Castle began in 1869 on the site of two former medieval fortresses, Vorderhohenschwangau and Hinterhohenschwangau, with a breathtaking view of the Tyrol and the green plains.
